Niue is a tropical island in the Pacific Ocean, located to the east of the Tonga Islands and 19 degrees south of the Equator; it is one of the largest coral islands in the world. A beekeeping industry was growing and honey was an important export before Cyclone Heta reached hurricane strength on New Year's Day 2004. From 4-6 January it headed in a beeline for Niue and destroyed their beekeeping industry making this variety of mead particularly precious. |
